Here is the synopsis of this book which has since been made into a movie (that I have yet to see):
It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still.
By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery.
So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.
But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jewish fist-fighter in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.

My initial impressions:

It took me a little while to get used to the narrator being Death, and remembering that as the story progressed (as there are times when the story seems to not have a narrator at all before "he" appears again). Also I didn't care for the times when Death was too impatient to let the story progress before the reader finds out a character's ultimate fate and instead tells you seeming out of the blue sometimes years ahead of the natural story progression.

I also realized that this is the first book I remember reading from the perspective of the Germans that sheltered Jews during WWII instead of the perspective of those being sheltered. Which was a nice change.

Progress:

During the RAT I wasn't able to complete this book. I did however read 366 of 550 pages this week. I hope to be able to finish this book soon as I was enjoying it very much (despite Death at times) and am now even more eager to watch the movie as I have heard from several sources that it is well worth seeing.

Have you read The Book Thief and/or seen the movie? If so what did you think? (remember I don't know how it ends, officially, yet)

Kielihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07215963954555726683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489047544577235366.post-17692159581219928792015-01-11T08:03:00.000-08:002015-01-13T14:59:50.782-08:00Hello Again! Updates.Wow it has been awhile. Sorry about that. Hope everyone had a great holiday season and new year!

Last year my main Goodreads reading challenge goal was to read 80 books. However other hobbies like knitting and binge watching tv series (that's a hobby right?) took away from my reading time in the later half of the year. This lead me to only reading 59 books for the year. That in mind my 2015 goal is set for 65 books.

I am also attempting again to complete the Alphabet challenge where you read 26 books, one for each letter of the alphabet (based on the first letter in their title). I have attempted this for the past three years and have yet to complete it. The most I've gotten to is 20 (in 2012 and 2013) books and the least is 17 (in 2014). I am hopeful for 2015.

Current/Upcoming Read-a-thons:

January 5th to 11th, 2015

#ayearathon year 2! This month's theme is Standalones and their group read book is The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak.

I started this read-a-thon reading The Book Thief and as of half way through the last day of the RAT I'm at 243/550 (44%). This is based on reading and finishing The Darkest Powers Bonus Pack 1 by Kelley Armstrong (not a standalone) for one day, not reading anything for a couple days and reading The Book Thief for the other 4 days (and working 9.5-10hr days). On my TBR for this read-a-thon was also Still Alice by Lisa Genova but at this point I don't think I'll get to it, though it's still on the list for reading soon (ideally before the movie comes out).

January 12th to 18th, 2015

Random-a-thon by SarusheTheReader

The theme is graphic novels and each day has a different mini challenge to complete. My plan is to get through some of my manga/graphic novels I planned to read for Dec 2014's #ayearathon and didn't get to. TBR to follow? Hopefully this will be a good way to start off the year and boost up my overall book count.

January 19th to 25th, 2015

#underhypedreads - theme: read as many underhyped books (under 5000 ratings of GR) as you can in the week.

TBR to follow. I am thinking I'll read a mixture of local authors and Doctor Who in order to get through more of the unread books on my shelves.

Otherwise this year I plan to read more of the books I own, borrow less from the library, and buy less from stores.

However I later realized this is the same week I am going to camp so won't be able to read quite as much, also packing a bunch of physical books might be an issue so my TBR will consist of mostly ebooks and audiobooks (once I figure out what I'm reading).

"The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 18th and runs through Sunday, August 24th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 11 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team"

I'm going to attempt to participate as much as possible in the #AYearAThon a group of monthly read-a-thons, that last one week in length, until December 2014. Each month has a different theme.

Check out all the details & discussion over at the goodreads group here! Or check out the videos about it these lovely ladies made: Alyssa, Ke-sha, Kristina, Bunny, Allyn, Liz, Catriona, and many more by searching #ayearathon on Youtube or on Twitter!

This month's theme is J.K. Rowling and extends from Feb 3rd to 9th.

My goal is to read:
The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling (CV) - 505 pages
Harry Potter the Prequel by J.K. Rowling - 4 pages
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (audiobook) by J.K. Rowling (HP7) - 784 pages

My current progress is as follows:
DAY ONE:
Prequel - COMPLETE - 4 pages
HP7 - 77 pages
CV - 0 pages
TOTAL: 81 pages

DAY TWO: (even more lacking than the first)
HP7 - 38 pages
CV - 19 pages
TOTAL (day): 57

DAY THREE:
HP7 - 31 pages (finished listening to the rest of the audiobook cds I have, and have yet to get a complete copy from the library)
CV - 13 pages
TOTAL (day): 44

DAY FOUR:
No progress. Haven't been able to acquire more HP audios so listened to more of "The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins during my commute/drive home from work. Also had a long day at work (where I can't read novels) and then fell asleep early after shoveling the snow (boo) from the driveway and having dinner. I am now off Fri, Sat, and Sun. so I hope to get my reading groove on then!

TOTAL SO FAR = 182 pages (I am unimpressed)Kielihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07215963954555726683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489047544577235366.post-21427875001172418072014-01-07T18:18:00.000-08:002014-01-07T18:23:12.155-08:00Bout of Books 9.0 and other updates...Towards the end of 2013 I attempted to finish all the books I had on the go before the new year. Although I made a real dent in the overwhelming number of partial finished books I didn't reach my goal of finishing them all. Which is disappointing. I like to start fresh each year from the first day of January onwards.

With starting fresh I was excited to participate in the Bout of Books 9.0 read-a-thon. But now I have decided to not participate in that either. You are probably thinking, wouldn't a read-a-thon help to finish up those loose ends to get closer to that fresh start faster? It might or it might not. In my case I am currently trying to finish Madame Tussaud by Michelle Moran, a book I have been reading on and off (more off than on) since Feb. 5, 2012. Which may be the book I've been "reading" for the longest amount of time in all my years of reading. Which is absolutely ridiculous to me. It isn't that it isn't interesting I just find that the smaller print and my complete lack of knowledge of the French revolution has slowed my progress. This is therefore not the type of book I would generally choose for a read-a-thon and if I did choose it I fear I would get discouraged as I wouldn't be able to reach/maintain a page count per day that I'd be satisfied with.

So I say no thank you to 9.0 but look forward to the next one as I plan to be ready to participate by then. I better be. I look forward to following along however during 9.0 so see how others are doing and to wish them all the best!

This delay in clearing out my "currently reading" shelf has also left me in a quandary of what reading goals and challenges I want to complete in 2014. For the last 3 or so years I attempted to read one book for each letter of the alphabet by corresponding with the initial letter of its title. Each year I got close but never successfully completed this challenge, despite reading over 26 books each year. So I just don't know if this will be my lucky year where I can complete it or whether it would be better to try a new challenge all together. My mind is so conflicted.Kielihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07215963954555726683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489047544577235366.post-48781793969272256042013-10-16T18:37:00.000-07:002013-10-16T18:37:04.319-07:00Currently ReadingHey all, curious what I am reading right now? Well here's the post for that! ;) Cuz you should just KNOW by now that I'm reading more than one thing!

1. Bitten by Kelley Armstrong (14% complete)... yes I finally started it but I really need to set aside some time to just read a bigger chunk of it at a time.

2. The Warrior Heir by Cinda Williams Chima (15% complete) - I got the fourth book of the trilogy (yup you read it right) for review from Net Galley so I now have to figure out when I'm going to find time to read the first three. Getting started on it though & liking the book so far.

3. Gone by Lisa McMann (40% complete) - needed something to listen to in my car when commuting so started the audiobook of this one to finish off the trilogy. Getting the feeling this one could have had some better plot twists so far in order to tie it to the previous books better, imo.

4. etc. I also have several books I borrowed from the library, partially read, and then had to return. I hope to clean up those loose ends soon by borrowing them again and getting them finished. I also have a couple books I own that I have started e.g. Madame Tussaud by Michelle Moran, The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie, and Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes, to name a few, which I have at the moment set aside but will return to them prior to the end of the year.Kielihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07215963954555726683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489047544577235366.post-9143457064269919242013-08-27T20:14:00.001-07:002013-08-27T20:14:08.309-07:00Bout of Books 8.0 - Wrap-upAnd so ends yet another read-a-thon. Bout of Books 8.0 officially ended Sunday at midnight. After 7 long days I'd have to say I'm fairly pleased with how I did. Although I didn't finish all the books I had included in my TBR at the start I was still able to read well over 150 pages a day. My original goal of 150 pages for Monday to Thursday and then 250 pages Friday to Sunday would have totalled 1350 pages, only 90 pages more than what I did accomplish and I picked up a couple other books that I hadn't planned on.

Rapture by Lauren Kate: This first book I had started prior to the RAT and then finished during it, banking 268 pages. I gave it 4/5 (though a slightly lesser 4/5 than the 4/5 I gave its predecessor, Passion). I listened to the audiobook by the lovely Justine Eyre. She does such a great job with giving each character a recognizable voice. I listened to it over Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Blood Brothers in Louisbourg by Philip Roy: This next book I also started prior to the read-a-thon but dispite a valiant attempt I didn't finish it during the week (Monday, Tuesday & Saturday) as I found its small print was eating up my time & the storyline (so far) wasn't intriguing me enough to want me to read the next page, the next chapter, etc. I hope to finish it sometime soon though when I get more time to devote to it. I had such high hopes for this book. I banked 48 pages with this book.

Hard Run by Tsugumi Ohba: The first book I picked up and began once the read-a-thon started was this next book. I also finished in completely on Monday, banking 193 pages and giving it 4/5 as I continue with the Death Note series of graphic novels.

Left Neglected by Lisa Genova: Continuing with my planned TBR, I picked up this adult contemporary book on Tuesday. I continued reading it Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, banking 322 pages and giving it 5/5 as I absolutely loved it! It really changed my outlook on life and how we take for granted things like knowing left exists and being able to see the left side of the world around us. It is also a definite contender for one of my favourite books of the year and for sure my favourite book I read during this RAT. Not my favourite cover for this book but here's the one I read:

Spore by Alex Scarrow: On Saturday I also bought/downloaded this short story which is #8 in the Doctor Who E-Shorts series which are released one per month on the 23rd and are each based on a reincarnation of The Doctor from the first (William Hartnell) to the eleventh (Matt Smith) by well-known children's authors. This one was thus based on the Eighth reincarnation played by Paul McGann, whom was only seen in Doctor Who the movie in 1996 however there are several books that depict more of his adventures. This e-short banked 40 pages towards my total and I gave it 4/5 stars. My most anticipated ebook in this series will be that of the tenth doctor, David Tennant, which will be released this October.

Love by Tsugumi Ohba: After such an emotional and thought prevoking book like Left Neglected I needed something fun to keep my reading going. That's where this book came in, the fourth in the Death Note series of graphic novels. I picked it up on Saturday and finished it the next day, banking 204 pages and giving it also a 4/5 as this one came out with some pretty funny lines that had me laughing out loud at times. Just what I needed.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater: By Saturday I realized I was missing out on adding to my page counts because I no longer had an audiobook on the go. Time when I was merely driving back and forth to work, and cooking and eating dinner were time being wasted as I was unable to read/hold a physical book at the same time. So I started this one. I love Maggie Stiefvater's books in audio as they always include some music at the beginning and end that she composed and performed herself. I also figured, since I also had a hardcopy of this book, that I could switch back and forth between the two mediums based on the situation. This was enjoyable but I found I was often relistening to sections of the book I had physically read just to read had the narrator said and name or how a new character's accent came across. I am still making my way through this book/audiobook but banked 185 pages of it during the RAT (Saturday and Sunday).

Here's my totals:

Day One/Monday: 250 pages
Day Two/Tuesday: 41 pages
Day Three/Wednesday: 199 pages
Day Four/Thursday: 166 pages
Day Five/Friday: 111 pages
Day Six/Saturday: 301 pages
Day Seven/Sunday: 193 pages

Weekly Total: 1260 pages
Daily Average: 180 pages
Books/Graphic Novels/Novellas Finished: 5
Partial Reads: 2
Today I finished reading Left Neglected which I absolutely loved. I then tried to read more of Blood Brothers in Louisbourg and promptly fell asleep. oops. Not sure what is going on with this book. I like the storyline; set in a place I've been, is historical fiction which I generally enjoy, it features a character that plays the cello which I enjoy the music of and once tried to learn to play one, and the main two characters are both very likeable. However the font is very small for such a seeming short book and it seems to be taking me so much longer to read it than anything else that I've picked up. I guess I am also finding it a bit too predictable, but I shall not give up on it (even if I find I must set it aside until the end of the RAT). So instead I started a couple other books that weren't on my TBR. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater as an audiobook to get my reading in while I cooked and ate and Love by Tsugumi Ohba for a fast paced graphic novel to break up the reading of longer books from a series I already know I like in which I read right up until midnight.

So here's how the numbers fell today, bringing my average pages read to 178 per day:
For a day without work I read even less than usual. Oh dear. I didn't start a new audiobook so times where I am usually driving someplace, cooking food, or eating were filled with quiet contemplation or a tv show versus get more pages read/listened to (mainly due to my ipod dying and my charge cord choosing this time to be MIA). My day also included playing Second Life for longer than I should have last night and then sleeping in late & then taking a lengthy nap later on. I did however read some more of Left Neglected and bought and read this month's Doctor Who e-short and my overall average is now at 153 pages per day (compared to my goal of 150 pages per day) so that's not too bad even if I'd love that to be a lot higher.
On Day Four I decided (consciously or not) to give my eyes a break and only listened to my audiobook. However this meant I was able to finish Rapture by Lauren Kate and thus add yet another series to my finished series list, which is awesome. Sad to see this one finish though (although I still have Fallen in Love the novella to read at some point). Out of the four book series, I believe my favourite was book number 3 (Passion) as I loved all the places it took place in. Today was also my last day of work for the week so Fri, Sat, and Sun possibly can be full of reading... well reading and packing my stuff to move, but we'll see. Really hoping to finish the two books I'm in the midst of and at least begin Bitten before Monday rolls around.

Here's my numbers for day four:

Then I was free from other commitments to read all night when I got home (minus time spent, napping, cooking and being distracted by youtube and facebook).
Participating in Bout of Books 8.0? How did you do on day three?

Where I usually would listen to my audiobook both to and from work in my car, I only listened to it for one direction as I gave a co-worker a lift and didn't want to subject them to 15-ish minutes of the middle of the last book in a series they haven't read after working an 8.5 hour shift. Then I spent longer than expected in Walmart picking out a new microwave and tv for my new house/apartment. Lastly tonight was the last ceilidh of the season in my community so I went and watched that during the time I'd usually be reading. I also felt pressure to read more pages so I started another book (at 11:30pm) as Blood Brothers in Louisbourg, dispite being quite short, has a small font so it is taking me awhile to get through.

So all in all (after all my excuses) this is how I faired on day two:

I ended up reading an average of 244 pages per day. This was a week where I could devote every moment (when I wasn't working or sleeping) to reading. This coming week I still have my work and sleep commitments but I also need to be packing for my upcoming move. So that being factored in I am making my goal to read 190 pages per day. This will hopefully give me the opportunity to complete all my planned books and, if I have extra time, choose based on mood another later on.

The Bout of Books RAT is all about reading more than you usually do and may include challenges along the way but (as far as I can tell) doesn't include a set of challenges to direct your book choosing as my previous one did. As I have so many books I want to read (all at once if I could lol) I enjoyed having the framework and structure those challenges gave to narrowing down my choices. Therefore I've looked elsewhere to give me structure, Goodreads (particularly the Nothing but Reading Challenges group).

I had already committed (at least in my own mind) to tackling the Reading University Challenge. I am currently on the Associate's degree level so I decided to choose my books for this RAT in order to work towards fulfilling that challenge's criteria (and to give myself a bit more diversity in the genres I choose) plus reading a couple books that are still left over from my TBR from the last RAT (oops).

Without further ado, here are the books I'm planning to read:
1. Blood Brothers in Louisbourg by Philip Roy - Started prior to RAT, History (american history) - total pages left: 121
2. Bitten (Women of the Otherworld #1) by Kelley Armstrong - TBR of last RAT - total pages: 436
3. Hard Run (Death Note #3) by Tsugumi Ohba - Literature (graphic novel) - total pages: 193
4. Left Neglected by Lisa Genova - Social Studies (psychology) - total pages: 322
5. Rapture (Fallen #4) by Lauren Kate - Started prior to RAT, audiobook - total pages left: 270

This totals: 1342 pages and an average of 191 pages per day or more like 150 per day from Monday to Thursday and then 247 on Fri, Sat & Sun when I'm off work. :)

Wish me luck!Kielihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07215963954555726683noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489047544577235366.post-69837880096025503312013-08-18T06:08:00.002-07:002013-08-18T13:00:11.368-07:00Updates & Bout of Books 8.0Hey all,

I feel like all I do is plan to post things here, tell you my plan, then I don't follow through. Then I come back here to apologia before sharing yet another plan. It's a vicious cycle. Anywho, my most recent disappearance from both here and youtube is from me having to find a new apartment on super short notice. I've been living in an apartment in a family's reno'd basement since June when I moved across the country. The plan was always to have a lease until the end of Aug. with the ability to extend the lease at that time if I chose to stay. My landlady sends me a message at the beginning of August asking me to let her know that week whether I was wanting to stay or not as she would love me to be understands if I want a bigger place. A day or two later I let her know I'd love to stay and she emails me back the next day informing me she isn't renting out the apartment to anyone and that I have until the 2nd of Sept to get out. Gee thanks lady! So since then I've been apartment hunting. Super stressful!

Anywho, I believe I now have a new place to live come Sept, so I can start getting back to my regular routines and that means back to reading. So why not participate in a read-a-thon? No reason at all (well other than packing like crazy, but whatevs). I just found out today that the Bout of Books read-a-thon is coming back next week! From August 19-25 and I will give it my best show to participate.

But what is the Bout of Books read-a-thon, you ask?
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender
and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that
begins 12:01am Monday, August 19th and runs through Sunday, August 25th
in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and
the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of
books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand
prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 8.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

I will let know what books I have planned to read probably later today. (I'm determined to follow through this time)

I am however I won't be reading the first novel in the series for some time yet. This is because of all the short stories that also make up a full reading of this series. Many of these stories (when looking at them chronologically) take place before the first book, as prequels. Here's the order list I am going by, provided by a pdf from Kelley Armstrong herself and by an order written by Maryse of Maryse's Book Blog. I've tried to block it up by month (basically one novel per month and then whatever short stories lead me there) and then will fill in my read dates once I finish each. Wish me luck! lol
So excited! That's on May 22nd. Which is awesome timing because I am moving from Ontario to Nova Scotia on the 28th for my new job. So I am trying to cram in as much Ontario stuff as I can before I go. That included getting all four of my wisdom teeth out this week. Ugg. That put a bit of a damper on my plans of getting ahead on my packing, reading, etc. and instead I've just been sleeping for the past couple days.

Anyways my To Be Read list for May may be a bit ambitious but it may also be a bit more accurate than previous TBRs.
You will see they differ slightly/quite a bit from my April TBR. Oops
At the very end of March I went to a book signing of Kelley Armstrong's in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. At that time I had several of her books on my shelves yet hadn't read any of them so I figured I'd better get cracking on them. By the time I saw her I was almost finished the Summoning and was really enjoying it. I ended up purchasing her most recent book The Rising at that event and I am looking forward to reading it but to get there I still have to read The Reckoning, the third book of the Darkest Powers trilogy, and The Gathering and The Calling the first two books of the Darkness Rising trilogy of which The Rising is the final book. Oh dear. So many books.

I read Destiny's Fire as part of the YouTube Book Club and really enjoyed it as well. I gave it a 4/5 because as much as I liked it I would have preferred more featuring the powers the characters possess than the love triangle aspects. Basically more action, less romance, but it was still a great book.

On May 25th, I am planning to attend Rachel Hawkins' booksigning in Brampton again so to prepare for this event I dusted off my Hex Hall trilogy books that have been on my shelf for what seems like ages and started to read. I read the first book Hex Hall in a day and then passed it off to my mother to read as well, as she will be coming with me to the booksigning. So onto the second book Demonglass...Kielihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07215963954555726683noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2489047544577235366.post-86433677637885868572013-04-28T14:38:00.001-07:002013-04-28T14:39:12.752-07:00Celtic Dagger
